How we classify retirement communities.

Retirement communities come in many hues. Just because a new (or old) gated community is marketed as a retirement community does not mean that it can take care of all your needs as you grow older.

While there are many ways of classifying retirement communities(by location, by price, by quality,…), one meaningful way is to group them based on the level of service they provide. This is what we have followed on our site and the meaning of each of the classes is given below:

Independent Living.
If a retirement community is classified as “Independent Living”, it means that they do not provide any specific facilities beyond what any apartment complex or gated community provides, such as security and power backup. However, they should provide provisions such as wider doors for easy entry of wheelchair, access ramps, Anti-slip tiles for wet areas, and disabled-friendly toilets. In addition, they should have a multi-speciality hospital in close proximity and have ambulance facility available at short notice.

Serviced Living.
Retirement communities under this classification will provide all that the Independent Living retirement homes provide. In addition they should provide most of the following services:

  • House keeping
  • Laundry
  • Shared Kitchen
  • Travel services
  • Regular medical checkups and visits
  • Emergency alarm system
  • Captive ambulance facility
  • Programs and activities
  • Concierge services

Assisted Living.
Retirement communities under this classification will provide all that the Serviced Living communities provide. In addition, they will provide facilities for people who may not be able to take care of themselves completely. Such services will include

  • 24×7 nursing and nursing assistance
  • medication management
  • memory care
  • physiotherapy
  • constant/regular medical supervision.

Essentially, if a community provides assisted living, then they should be able to take care of a person under any condition that does not require hospitalization.
