Anandam Retirement Community
Note: Anandam is currently available for purchase, but is not ready to live in yet. The first people are expected to move in by end of 2013.
Bahri Beautiful Country’s Anandam retirement home is part of a large 270+ acre township currently being built. Located on the foothills of Kodaikanal, the gated community will have 200 villas for the retirement homes / senior homes, along with second homes, a resort, commercial centre with food court, medical facilities and a golf course. The center will provide both independent and assisted living. Anandam is being constructed by Bahri Estates, a real estate company and Aamkosh One Eighty, a company that specializes in running and operating retirement homes.
Anandam contains over 100+ studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom homes and is expected to support a retired population of about 250 people upon full occupancy. All the homes are on the ground floor and have been designed ground up to be wheelchair and senior friendly. All doorways are wide and gentle ramps are provided at the entrance of the homes. The outside is expected to be landscaped with lots of pathways for walking and jogging.
Anandam, when it is ready, will provide complete assisted living facilities through Aamoksh One Eighty. There is also a 150-bed hospital planned that will contain state-of-the-art facilities and is expected to take care of all the needs of the retirement communities patrons as well as that of the public in and around BBC.
Old is Gold Store (OIGS) visited the site in January 2013. The location is very nice, just as the ghat roads begin on the way to Kodaikanal. The temperature at the time of visit was very pleasant – cool but not chill. Last year the highest temperature recorded was 34 Celsius and the lowest was 19 Celsius, so one can expect fairly moderate temperatures, ideal for senior people, throughout the year.
If you are expecting yourself or your family to move in immediately, I am afraid you will be disappointed. While all the basic infrastructural work (roads, electricity, water supply, street lights, …) has been completed, only a handful of homes have come up and quite a lot of work is yet to be done before these can be occupied. The way this place works is that you buy a plot of land and then the company builds the home for you based on standard plans which you can modify to some extent (without altering the external appearance). Hopefully, by the time the construction is completed, the club house, common kitchen, restaurant and other facilities will be ready and you can then move in. The hospital and spa, the school, etc., may take a while longer to be ready. The good news is that the work that has been done so far is on par with the artist’s rendering in the brochures (the villas look pretty identical to the pretty pictures in the brochures!).
Aamoksh One Eighty is the Indian arm of One Eighty, an American company that has been operating several retirement homes in the US and the operations at Anandam will be in their experienced hands. So that is very good news as Anandam is geared to take care of all your growing needs as you age. However, until a significant number of people start living in the community, it is unlikely that they will be able to provide all the facilities that will eventually be offered.
Bottom line, Anandam is work-in-progress. If you are in your late 40s or early 50s, this would be an ideal time to invest in a home at Anandam, so that by the time you decide to retire, everything will be in place for you.
